On the 26 of September, the Wang Innovation Center worked with the Technology Club led by George Kagler ’21 and Samuel Bick ’21 to organize an outdoor LAN party for all students on campus. The LAN party was an opportunity for students to forget about homework, talk with friends and (most importantly) play video games.
Using the six television screens brought out of Seymour, the LAN party held tournaments for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Carter Frato-Sweeney ’22 and Elie Aoun ’21 won the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament. Daniel Li ’22 won the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament. Daniel Li stated that while he liked the fact he won that tournament, he did not like that he did not have a chance to defeat George Kagler (who opted out of this tournament after winning several in previous years).
Beyond the competitions, many students used the LAN party as an opportunity to wind down and have fun. Many students could be heard laughing and yelling with excitement while playing casual games with their friends. Vivien Marmerstein ’21 said: “It was a fun environment to hang out in, even for people like me who are bad at video games.” David Gentile ’21 explained that it was “probably one of [his] favorites” of the LAN parties he has attended at Western Reserve Academy. The LAN party proved to be a great deal of fun for gamers and non-gamers alike.
The LAN party was a much-needed break from the stress of school life, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The community is thankful for the hard work put into the event by the WIC and Technology Club that allowed it to run smoothly and successfully!
