Moynahan Named Head Football Coach

As preseason dawned upon the Western Reserve Academy community, the athletic department named a new football coach: Jimmy Moynahan. Moynahan had been an assistant coach for the two seasons prior.

Following the departure of former head coach Dan Larocco, Moynahan hopes to instill a winning culture and continue the team’s recent success. Moynahan and his coaching staff have installed a new offense, the triple option. This offensive scheme ensures that opposing defenses will have their hands full, with three backs instead of the traditional two. Through this new offense, Moynahan wishes to maximize scoring opportunities and optimize player usage. Typically, drastically changing an offense provides a roadblock in a potential winning season, but Moynahan is confident that his players are up for the task. Senior captains Evan Bongers ’19 and Jake Pendergraft ’19 hope to guide the team in a winning direction and mentor the younger players, laying the groundwork for future success on the football field at WRA. Although Moynahan had very little time to recruit players and a coaching staff, he made the search global: he was able to land student-athletes from Germany, Nigeria, Nova Scotia, and numerous other countries and regions. With the small time frame he was provided, players believe Moynahan made the best of the situation.

Moynahan hopes to show his players how to do things the right way on the football field and instill a strong work ethic and togetherness. Coach Moynahan is confident that the subsequent results will translate to success for the 2018 WRA Football Team.
