Athlete Spotlight – Evan Bongers

Evan Bongers ’19 has proved to have a strong presence as an athlete for the Western Reserve Academy Pioneers ever since he stepped on the lawn’s wide sweep as a freshman. Whether it’s on the football field, the basketball court, or the lacrosse field, Bongers, or as his teammates call him, Dennis, is a force to be reckoned with. For the 2018-2019 season, he was named one of the captains of the WRA football team. Bongers spent his most recent summer preparing for his athletics by practicing football and playing at several lacrosse camps. This fall, he has been playing under center as the WRA’s starting quarterback. After two games, Bongers is leading the team in passing yards and rushing touchdowns. He has also found success on defense as a safety and has a talent for stripping the ball from receivers. Because of his versatility on both sides of play, he has received pro comparisons to Deion Sanders from scouts and peers alike. Many have been calling him a leader on and off the field. Bongers believes that “everyone on the roster has been working extremely hard so far” and that “the offensive line has been doing an expectation-shattering job of protecting him in the pocket.” His teammates have also attributed a portion of their success to Bongers’s “dedication to the sport and his charismatic advice.”

He is also a consistent force for the WRA basketball team, and he will see an increase in playing time for his senior year with the departure of Andrew Boniface ’18 along with other guards. Coach Adams-Wall has remarked on Bongers’s competitive nature on the court by saying, “He brings a special energy to practice on a daily basis. While his primary sport is lacrosse, he truly understands what it means to compete every day.” He will find himself in a major role for this year’s lacrosse team as the squad’s best midfielder. He has played copious minutes on the lacrosse field during his years at WRA, including a selection for the 2nd All-MSLA Team last season. His final season wearing the green and white approaches with each passing day. When lacrosse season comes, he will answer the question we all are asking ourselves: Will 2019 be the year of the Dennis?!
