Pumped for Pumpkin Spice

Pumpkin Spice Latte season is back and stronger than ever! Cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove…what a beast combination! Everytime I walk through the doors of a coffee shop, store or restaurant, my eyes immediately scan the area for any sign labeled “pumpkin”. There is just something about the mix of pumpkin and coffee that makes the world go crazy. Abby King ’18 exclaims, “I LOVE PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES!” while Sidney Bailey ’18, however, explained the drink is “overhyped” and the “stereotypical ‘white girl’ fall drink.” Some are not so enthusiastic about PSL, or pumpkin spice latte, season coming into full blast, like Alexis Shoemaker ’18 when she explained, “I don’t like anything pumpkin flavored.”

While I do love a good pumpkin spice latte, there is only one drink that beats it…the pumpkin spice chai tea latte! Having an extra kick of cardamom and ginger that complements the steamed milk and warm vanilla is like a dance battle in your mouth! However, some establishments do create a better cup of pumpkin spice than others. I highly recommend steering clear of the overly artificially sweetened Starbucks PSL and rather purchase a calm and tasty pick-me-up PSL from Open Door! I first fell for the Pumpkin Spice (Chai Tea) Latte the fall before freshman year when the pumpkin hype originally picked up. Despite the strong love I feel for anything pumpkin spice, I rarely order this drink in public due to the glares and glances I receive because of the stigma the drink carries with its name.

But the PSL skeptics will never be able to change my feelings about my dear drink. I will most certainly continue to purchase instant PSL packets and drink my heart away while my mouth is being swarmed with the zestiness, warm feelings, and sweet taste encapsulated by the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
