Yay for Free Days

On Monday, April 10, students and faculty of Western Reserve Academy filed into the Chapel for what they assumed would be a normal Morning Meeting. However, the mundanity was broken by a series of unforeseen events.

The first bit of excitement came when the Pioneer Pep Band announced that not only had they come in first in both of the regional competitions they had competed in, but they had managed to clinch first place in the State Championship. WRA is home to state champions which seemed an impossible feat for a school that is prohibited from competing in the tournament for athletics.

As if that was not enough excitement for one day, Kathryn Mueller, the Associate Head of School, shared some very exciting news with the school: Head of School Chris Burner had agreed to giving us a free day! The entire Chapel erupted in shouts and applause at the terrific news. After class pictures were taken outside, people began to take advantage of this day off. Students quickly invaded downtown and were faced with the question from different establishments: “Don’t you have school today?” Happily, we responded, “No, because we go to the greatest school on earth with the most amazing administration”…or something along those lines.

From the reaction of many, it was clear that this day was exactly what everyone needed in the final stretch of school. Ellie Kuhen ’20 commented, “It was a fun, well-needed day that was spent in the sun with friends. Couldn’t have come at a better time.” Andrew Boniface ’18 added, “It was great and needed after the struggles of junior year, but still had to take a test.” So the day, while not perfect, was extremely appreciated. These days do not happen often, but when it does, we take full advantage of such a special day, and we are very thankful to Mr. Burner for giving us this time off.
